Linde was founded in 1879 by Karl von Linde, a prominent German engineer, inventor, and scientist who made significant contributions to the development of technology, thermodynamics, and cryogenics.

Karl was born in Bavaria in 1842, received a technical higher education at the Zurich Polytechnic School. In 1876, he invented a mechanical refrigeration machine based on experiments on the expansion of ammonia. This essentially gave a breakthrough in the development of industrial production, and directly in the food industry.

His innovations helped create systems for storing, cooling, and transporting food.

At the beginning of its activities, Linde (Linde's Eismaschinen) specialized exclusively in the production of refrigeration equipment and cooling systems.
